phpMyAdmin is used for remote work with databases through a browser. It was written using the PHP language. It is used for administration and remote work with the MySQL server.
This web interface is widely used in practice today, as it provides extensive capabilities for working with databases. Despite its fairly extensive functionality, the application remains accessible even to people who are only generally familiar with MySQL. When working with a database, there is no need to enter SQL commands directly.
To do this, it’s enough to use the user interface, which supports all the main and most popular commands. But in addition to working directly with the user interface, it is possible to enter SQL queries.
The popularity of this product among web developers is easily explained. First of all, it's the ease of use and availability of the utility. The open-source program with an intuitive interface is available for use even by programming beginners.
The developers of phpMyAdmin have also taken care of language localization – the utility is translated into more than 60 languages, including Russian. But the main factor, of course, is the versatility and productivity of this program. One of the key features is the import and export of databases using the browser, i.e., downloading and uploading database copies.
To do this, the utility’s workspace has import and export sections. To work directly with them, click on the respective icon. After entering the section, a page with export and import settings opens.
There is a quick copy option, but you can also set additional settings, such as the dump format or selecting specific tables. After setting all options, click the OK button to start the operation. Another useful feature provided by the program is the optimization of database tables.
Since databases are constantly updated, it is recommended to defragment table indexes at least once a month for proper operation. This ensures the speed of sample queries, despite constant additions and deletions of records in the database. There is also the ability to restore tables damaged by scripts.
Global or partial search simplifies navigation in the database. Administration of multiple servers simultaneously is also supported.
