eMule for
Windows is used for data exchange
on the ed2k file-sharing network. It was created to replace eDonkey2000. It can also work on the Kad network. In 2007, eMule received the “
Best New Project” nomination, although it was far from new by then. Modifications have been created based on eMule, and cross-platform versions are also available.
Over the lifetime of the eMule project, there have been many changes. Attempts were made to shut down the network. Software was created to harm the network, which drove people away from eMule. Even today, there are many fake clients and servers constantly trying to damage the network (e.g., by serving fake files). The countermeasure against this is a special file filter containing the IP addresses of violators, which are simply ignored. In newer versions, file parts are continuously checked during downloading (AICH hash). Even if a part is accidentally corrupted, eMule instantly detects it and redownloads it.
Periodically, major ed2k servers are shut down. But this doesn't cause any particular problems for users because eMule can operate on the decentralized Kad network, which is impossible to destroy.
Main functionality:
- To create a unified, reliable network, the client uses multiple networks: ED2K, Kad, Source Exchange.
- The queuing and credit system ensures faster downloads of a desired file if the user shares that same file with other clients.
- eMule is free software with no spyware or adware add-ons.
- All files are checked for errors during the download process.
- Auto-tuning and the source manager allow simultaneous downloading of multiple files without user supervision.
- Preview allows you to watch partially downloaded movies or look into archives before the download is complete. For video previews, we recommend VLC (Video LAN Client).
- eMule has a web server and web service, allowing you to control the client from another PC or a mobile phone (MobileMule feature). For full remote control, a routable IP address is required.
- You can send messages to other clients and add them to your friends list. Then you will always see when friends are online.
- eMule integrates an IRC client. You can chat with people from anywhere in the world.
- UPnP support based on Shareaza code.
eMule records detailed statistics, allowing you to view the list of downloads for the current session and for the entire period.
Currently, special builds are particularly popular, which include backup of service files, IP address blocking, link creation, and retrieval of media file information.
