To gain access to the BOOT.INI file, which allows flexible configuration of Windows startup parameters, you should enable the display of hidden files, as this file is not displayed by default and is hidden, making it difficult to find.
To enable the display of hidden files and folders in Windows, do the following:
- Click the "Start" button, go to "Control Panel", then find the "Folder Options" item and open it.
- In the window that appears, go to the "View" tab, then in the list that appears, check the box next to "Show hidden files and folders".
Now hidden Windows items will be displayed.
Once you have performed these steps, go to the local drive "C", in the root of which the BOOT.INI file is located. However, this method is only relevant for operating systems no older than Windows XP.
As for Windows 7 and higher versions, the BOOT.INI file is absent.
It has been replaced by the Boot Configuration Data (BCD) file, which can be edited via the command line. To find where the file is stored and make changes to the BOOT.INI of the Windows 7 operating system, you should use a special program that is included with Windows 7.
- This program is located at c:\Windows\System32>bootcfg /? BOOTCFG /<operation> [<arguments>]
This command-line program can be used to extract, modify, or delete BOOT.INI parameters.
